    Lone Star, A Small Communication Satellite for Texas

    The Texas State Legislature has passed a bill recommending that the state examine the feasibility of developing a home grown satellite for communications applications. Such a satellite would be built in Texas by a state, industry and university consortium with the intent that it be launched by a Texas built launch vehicle. This paper reports on a quick look design and trade-off study that was performed to determine the characteristics and possible configurations that such a small satellite system would have. The communications link budget is discussed and used to define the communications payload that would be carried by the satellite. Mission constraints and orbital options are considered, as well as launch vehicle performance to the possible working orbits. A baseline spacecraft is presented and the principal subsystems are discussed

    Auroral Cluster: A Space Physics Mission for Multiple, Electronically Tethered Small Satellites

    Auroral Cluster is a space physics mission that has been identified by the NASA Space Physics Strategic Implementation Study as a candidate for flight in the next decade. Auroral Cluster will employ multiple spacecraft outfitted with similar complements of science instruments allowing simultaneous multipoint plasma measurements in the Earth\u27s auroral regions. Co-orbiting small satellites (mass \u3c 400 kg each) that are electronically tethered to share distributed spacecraft systems represent an efficient approach for achieving the science goals of the Auroral Cluster mission. Multisatellite missions represent a new trend in gathering space science data and pose many new and difficult challenges for the space systems engineer. The results of an Auroral Cluster feasibility study, which discusses a variety of mission trade-offs, are presented. A discussion of the science background and mission goals is used to identify the technical drivers for the design of the multiple spacecraft system. A mission plan and some considerations for a Auroral Cluster satellite design are presented. Special consideration is given to the spacecraft subsystems that will allow the system to be operated as a network of electronically tethered interdependent small satellites. These subsystems include attitude determination, spatial separation knowledge and control, data storage, and intersatellite communication

    Radiocarbon Date List X: Baffin Bay, Baffin Island, Iceland, Labrador Sea, and the Northern North Atlantic

    Date List X contains an annotated listing of 213 radiocarbon dates determined on samples from marine and terrestrial environments. The marine samples were collected from the East Greenland, Iceland, Spitzbergen, and Norwegian margins, Baffin Bay, and Labrador Sea. The terrestrial samples were collected from Vestfirdir, Iceland and Baffin Island. The samples were submitted by INSTAAR and researchers affiliated with INSTAAR\u27s Micropaleontology Laboratory under the direction of Dr.’s John T. Andrews and Anne E. Jennings. All of the dates from marine sediment cores were determined from either shells or foraminifera (both benthic and planktic). All dates were obtained by the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) method. Regions of concentrated marine research include: Baffin Bay, Baffin Island, Labrador Sea, East Greenland fjords, shelf and slope, Denmark Strait, the southwestern and northwestern Iceland shelves, and Vestfirdir, Iceland. The non-marine radiocarbon dates are from peat, wood, plant microfossils, and mollusc. The radiocarbon dates have been used to address a variety of research objectives such as: 1. determining the timing of northern hemisphere high latitude environmental changes including glacier advance and retreat, and 2. assessing the accuracy of a fluctuating reservoir correction. Thus, most of the dates constrain the timing, rate, and interaction of late Quaternary paleoenvironmental fluctuations in sea level, glacier extent, sediment input, and changes in ocean circulation patterns. Where significant, stratigraphic and sample contexts are presented for each core to document the basis for interpretations

    Microbial engineering of new streptomyces sp. from extreme environments for novel antibiotics and anticancer drugs

    Today there is a tremendous need for new antibiotics and novel cytotoxic compounds against cancer cells to develop efficient alternative treatment to chemotherapy. We have searched for highly active Streptomyces strains in the driest desert in the world, the Atacama desert in northern Chile. We have identified several new strains and found many novel antibiotics and anticancer agents (“Chaxamycins”, “Chaxalactins” and “Atacamycins”) from Streptomyces C34 and C38. A genome scale model of the metabolism of Streptomyces leeuwenhoekii C34 has been developed from its genome sequence. The model, iVR1007, has 1726 reactions including 239 for transport, reactions for secondary metabolite biosynthesis, 1463 metabolites and 1007 genes. The model was validated with experimental data of growth in 89, 54 and 23 sole carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous sources, respectively, and showed a high level of accuracy (82.5 %). We have included reactions for desferrioxamines, ectoine, Chaxamycins, Chaxalactins and for the hybrid polyketides/non-ribosomal peptide synthesized by the halogenase cluster. A detailed Metabolic Flux Balance Analysis was carried out in order to study the metabolic pathways of Chaxalactins, Chaxamycins and the product of the halogenase cluster, by recognizing overexpression targets and useful knock-out sites to increase production of these secondary metabolites. Alternatively we have identified the gene cluster in S. leeuwenhoekii C34 responsible for the biosynthesis of the Chaxamycins and Chaxalactins and have cloned the whole gene cluster in a much more efficient strain of Streptomyces, namely S. coelicolor A3 whose heterologous expression of gene clusters from other Streptomyces strains has been successfully tested. Our recent results concerning these two alternative strategies for identification and overproduction of these important secondary metabolites will be presented and discussed in this presentation

    Effects of arformoterol twice daily, tiotropium once daily, and their combination in patients with COPD

    Current guidelines support using in combination more than one class of long-acting bronchodilator for COPD patients whose symptoms are not controlled by mono-therapy. This 2-week, multi-center (34 sites), randomized, modified-blind, parallel group study evaluated the efficacy and safety of concomitant treatment with nebulized arformoterol (the formoterol(R,R)-isomer) BID and tiotropium DPI QD. COPD patients (mean FEV(1) 1.37L, 45.4% predicted) were randomized to receive mono-therapy (either arformoterol 15microg BID [n=76] or tiotropium 18microg QD [n=80]), or combined therapy (sequential dosing of arformoterol 15microg BID and tiotropium 18microg QD [n=78]). Changes in pulmonary function, dyspnea, and rescue levalbuterol use were evaluated, as were safety outcomes. Mean FEV(1)AUC(0-24) (the primary endpoint) improved similarly from baseline for arformoterol (0.10L) and tiotropium (0.08L) treatment groups and greater for the combined therapy group (0.22L; all p-values <0.005). Peak FEV(1), peak FVC, 24-h trough FEV(1), and inspiratory capacity also improved similarly for the mono-therapies and greatest for the combined therapy. Dyspnea (mean transition dyspnea index) improved similarly for arformoterol (+2.3) and tiotropium (+1.8) and greatest with combined therapy (+3.1; p-values <0.05). Levalbuterol use decreased for all treatment groups (range -1.8 to -2.5 actuations/day). All treatments had similar frequency of adverse events. In this study, the combination of nebulized arformoterol 15microg BID plus tiotropium 18microg DPI QD was the most effective in improving pulmonary function and disease symptoms. Mono-therapy improvement with arformoterol or tiotropium was similar. All three treatments were well tolerated

    Methodological Guidelines for Engineering Self-organization and Emergence

    The ASCENS project deals with the design and development of complex self-adaptive systems, where self-organization is one of the possible means by which to achieve self-adaptation. However, to support the development of self-organising systems, one has to extensively re-situate their engineering from a software architectures and requirements point of view. In particular, in this chapter, we highlight the importance of the decomposition in components to go from the problem to the engineered solution. This leads us to explain and rationalise the following architectural strategy: designing by following the problem organisation. We discuss architectural advantages for development and documentation, and its coherence with existing methodological approaches to self-organisation, and we illustrate the approach with an example on the area of swarm robotics

    Sedentary time and markers of inflammation in people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes

    AbstractBackground and aimsWe investigated whether objectively measured sedentary time was associated with markers of inflammation in adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.Methods and resultsWe studied 285 adults (184 men, 101 women, mean age 59.0 ± 9.7) who had been recruited to the Early ACTivity in Diabetes (Early ACTID) randomised controlled trial. C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and accelerometer-determined sedentary time and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured at baseline and after six-months. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate the independent cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of sedentary time with markers of inflammation.At baseline, associations between sedentary time and IL-6 were observed in men and women, an association that was attenuated following adjustment for waist circumference. After 6 months of follow-up, sedentary time was reduced by 0.4 ± 1.2 h per day in women, with the change in sedentary time predicting CRP at follow-up. Every hour decrease in sedentary time between baseline and six-months was associated with 24% (1, 48) lower CRP. No changes in sedentary time between baseline and 6 months were seen in men.ConclusionsHigher sedentary time is associated with IL-6 in men and women with type 2 diabetes, and reducing sedentary time is associated with improved levels of CRP in women. Interventions to reduce sedentary time may help to reduce inflammation in women with type 2 diabetes

    Caustic Formation in Tachyon Effective Field Theories

    Certain configurations of D-branes, for example wrong dimensional branes or the brane-antibrane system, are unstable to decay. This instability is described by the appearance of a tachyonic mode in the spectrum of open strings ending on the brane(s). The decay of these unstable systems is described by the rolling of the tachyon field from the unstable maximum to the minimum of its potential. We analytically study the dynamics of the inhomogeneous tachyon field as it rolls towards the true vacuum of the theory in the context of several different tachyon effective actions. We find that the vacuum dynamics of these theories is remarkably similar and in particular we show that in all cases the tachyon field forms caustics where second and higher derivatives of the field blow up. The formation of caustics signals a pathology in the evolution since each of the effective actions considered is not reliable in the vicinity of a caustic. We speculate that the formation of caustics is an artifact of truncating the tachyon action, which should contain all orders of derivatives acting on the field, to a finite number of derivatives. Finally, we consider inhomogeneous solutions in p-adic string theory, a toy model of the bosonic tachyon which contains derivatives of all orders acting on the field. For a large class of initial conditions we conclusively show that the evolution is well behaved in this case. It is unclear if these caustics are a genuine prediction of string theory or not.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in JHEP.
